So, you’ve decided you want to be a doctor. Taking on a career in medicine is a daunting task, and the first step is getting into medical school. Just getting accepted is extremely difficult, and entrance into med school is getting more and more competitive every year.
Being a doctor is not for everyone, and just getting into and through medical school will test your grit and resolve. You will face many years of sacrifice, first in med school, then during your internship and residency. Even after you become a doctor, your studies aren’t over. Throughout your career, you’ll have to dedicate plenty of time to reading up and staying current on new techniques and research in your field.
You may envision a career in medicine as a glamorous lifestyle—one where you spend a couple hours a day visiting with patients before driving off in your Porsche to the golf course. You might think that if you can just get through med school, it will all be easy sailing after that. But that’s rarely the way it works. The divorce rate among doctors is very high, and they have a shorter life expectancy than people in many other careers. Your career will also affect those around you. Your family will have to make a lot of sacrifices along with you throughout med school, internship, residency and your career. For this reason, a career in medicine is sometimes referred to as a “jealous lover.” It will fight for your time and won’t let you get away with any neglect. If your heart isn’t set on a career in medicine, you may be setting yourself up for many years of unhappiness.
With competition so tight to get into medical school, you may be doing harm to more than your own happiness if you try to pursue a career that’s not right for you. You’ll be taking that coveted acceptance letter away from someone else who may have the real desire and dedication to be a great doctor. You will have wasted someone else’s chance at a career of their dreams.
This information isn’t meant to dissuade you from pursuing a medical career. However, you should know what you’re getting into before you invest a lot of time, money and effort into something that might not be right for you. Don’t go into this endeavor lightly. Learn as much as you can about the process and weigh all the pros and cons. Then, if you still want to pursue a career in medicine, there’s a lot of valuable information available to help you get started.
It’s easy to get overwhelmed, but if you read up on the pre-med requirements, AMCAS application process, MCATs and all the other elements that work together to get you into med school, you’ll get a lot of help on the road to getting that acceptance letter into your choice of excellent medical schools. If your heart is set on becoming a doctor, it’s time to get to work. Good luck!
